Did you know that seven Australians will receive a life-changing diagnosis of type 1 diabetes today?
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a lifelong autoimmune disease that destroys the body’s ability to produce insulin, a hormone which is vital for life. People can be diagnosed with the disease at any age, with peak age of diagnosis between the ages of 10 and 14.
People with T1D need multiple insulin injections each day or a continuous infusion from an insulin pump. However, insulin is not a cure. A strict daily regime of blood glucose management can be a heavy burden, impacting quality of life through the constant fear of low blood sugar and the risk of complications.
JDRF’s mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications.
JDRF is the leading global organisation funding T1D research and is built on a grassroots model of people connecting in their local communities, collaborating regionally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact, and uniting on an international stage to pool resources, passion and energy.
